Matt Stevens is excited to continue developing a strong XC program at Mountainside. Matt ran XC and track through middle and high school in Hawai’i where he won three consecutive individual state championships, as well as six state track titles. He went on to run a combined four years of XC and track at Harvard University and Hawaii Pacific University. His PR’s include a 4:17 1600m, 1:11 and 2:38 for half and full marathons, as well as 34 hours at the HURT 100 miler. His coaching experience includes head coaching in XC and track at Bonjoge Boys Secondary School in western Kenya, as well as four years of high school coaching in Hawai’i and one year as a grad assistant for HPU XC. While knowledgeable about the technical aspects of training and racing, Matt’s real passion is developing camaraderie and character through running that will help students for all of life’s various challenges.
With 10 years of teaching experience, Matt is also starting his first year on the Mountainside staff teaching Global Politics and American history. His wife, Lesley, teaches physics and biology at Mountainside and they have a nine year old son and a seven year old daughter.
Liz Anjos is thrilled to help continue to establish strong tradition and legacy among the Mountainside Mavericks. Liz ran cross country at Christopher Dock Mennonite High School in Pennsylvania and went on to compete on the cross country and track teams at Greenville College. A lifelong runner, Liz is still chasing personal records with bests of 18:01 in the 5K, 36:44 in the 10K, and 1:23:16 in the half marathon. Her coaching experience began with assistant coaching the Greenville College Women’s Cross Country Team in 2008, where they capped off the season as SLIAC Champions. She has been coaching post-collegiate and individual runners for over ten years, and co-founded the Portland-based running team Rose City Track Club.
Coach Jaegersen is a runner and writer who’s looking forward to helping strengthen the Mountainside Cross Country program. For the last several years she coached newer trail runners train for trail races from the 5k up to half-marathon distance. Jaegersen has raced distances from 5K to 100 mile ultra-marathons on courses ranging from flat, fast and paved to technical trails with 40,000ft of elevation change. She is currently training to PR in the marathon this Fall.
Coach Mortinson is looking forward to seeing the Mountainside XC team push themselves to their full potential. He is a professional filmmaker/photographer with a focus on outdoor commercial and documentary work. Being an avid mountain ultra trail runner and having covered single-push distances as far as 100-miles, Steven specializes in mental focus and endurance within the sport. From time to time Steven will be seen at practices with his 5-year-old daughter, Charlie, at his side and ready to cheer everyone on!
